Lets see, we bail out a large financial institution - literally keep them alive - they make a grunch of money because of taxpayer subsidies, pay off the loans, and now want to shortchange the taxpayers on the return we are entitled so they can pay record, or near record, bonuses to their employees. Way to go Goldman Sachs - reinforce that greedy, the U.S. can go to hell, self centered image many have of Wall Street firms.
I am not saying we should drag Goldman across the coals, and I am not saying that the government should tax them or set a limit on the compensation people can earn - I am in fact against those "remedies." However, we (the taxpayers) do deserve a fair return on the over 22.9 billion dollars that Goldman received directly and indirectly in TARP funds. Alas, it does not seem Goldman agrees - perhaps next time they are teetering on the edge of the abyss we should just grab a beer, bag of popcorn and watch them fail- or maybe help them along a tad.
