Senator Dodd (D. Conn) has been receiving a lot of heat over his cozy relationship with lobbyist - so cozy that he was given "VIP" treatment by Countrywide - one of the financial institutes that was a major player in the collapse of the mortgage loan market. Exactly what benefits were included in the "VIP" treatment Dodd received is imposable to tell - he refuses to release the records that would tell us. At the very least the interest on his mortgage is below the market rate. Additionally, he is having a wee bit of trouble explaining how he came to own a cottage in Ireland valued somewhere between $600,000 and well over a $1,000,000 for a fraction of the cost. The confusion over the value of the cottage is due to the good Senator refusing to release all the records and agree to an appraisal of the property.
So what does a politician who is outed as a lobbyist tool do? Why, reinvent himself as a person lobbyists hate. So in a fit of what I suppose Dodd thought was genius he sent a fund raising email touting his anti-lobbyist credentials - with this link - to a short video supposedly showing how lobbyists are all strung out because he wont meet with them.
You would think Dodd, an accomplished politician (and I mean that in the worst possible way), would have known that when one talks out of both sides of their mouth, they need to be careful who hears the words from which side. But apparently not - he sent the email not only to his constitutes - who must be laughing - but also to the lobbyists on his fund raising list. One lobbyist summed it up quiet well:
“Can you believe this idiot is sending this to lobbyists?”
The tragedy in having Dodd serve as a senator, is that it deprives a village in Connecticut of an idiot.
